Jill Scott is the only child from her mom Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 4, 1972. Jill Scott was raised by both her maternal grandparents and mother. The only child she has. Scott was educated at Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduation, Scott enrolled into Temple University. She completed her secondary education her time at Temple University while working on two other jobs. She hoped to be an English teacher at the high school level. This dream however, was short-lived when she quit school after three years of studies and was an aide to teachers. She started her career singing live poetry and performing her own work. Then she joined forces along with Amir Quest Thompson, a part of The Roots. You Got Me, their joint song, was written by them. Then, during Roots' performance, she revealed herself as an artist. After that, she secured collaborations with artists like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. In addition, she had the opportunity to experience the arts of performing during the Broadway tour across Canada's musical Rent. She was the first artist signed by Hidden Beach Recordings.
